Last Seen Leaving the Pub: The Vanishing of Tracey Brazzel

Who Was Tracey Elizabeth Brazzel?

Tracey Elizabeth Brazzel was a 22-year-old woman living in Everett, Snohomish County, Washington. She stood 5’2” tall, weighed 130 pounds, and had bleached blonde hair with green/blue eyes. Distinctive tattoos marked her body: a small rose with the name “Tracey” on her shoulder blade, a snake tattoo on one ankle, and additional tattoos on her back, breast, right hip, and ankles. She also had pierced ears and nose.

Tracey was known for keeping close contact with her family and friends. She was independent, vibrant, and attentive to those she cared about. However, her personal life included complex relationships, including a recently reconciled ex-boyfriend and another former boyfriend who was reportedly stalking her.

Circumstances Leading Up to Her Disappearance

Tracey’s final days were marked by a mixture of personal and professional challenges. On May 26, 1995, she abruptly quit her job as a hairstylist at a Mill Creek salon midway through her shift, citing personality conflicts with coworkers. Friends recall she was frustrated but resolute in her decision, reflecting her determination to take control of her life.

In addition to workplace stress, Tracey was navigating personal relationships that added tension. She had reconciled with a former boyfriend days before her disappearance, yet faced potential threats from another ex who had begun stalking her. Friends and family worried that these circumstances could make her vulnerable.

That night, she visited Kodiak Ron’s Pub, a familiar local hangout. Around 1:45 a.m., she was last seen leaving the pub, presumably driving back to her apartment at Keeler’s Corner in North Lynnwood. What should have been a routine, short drive home became the night her life mysteriously vanished.

Discovery of Her Vehicle

Tracey’s white Ford Probe was found near her apartment shortly after she was reported missing. The vehicle showed disturbing signs: the passenger-side window was broken, yet no glass was found inside the car, and a small bloodstain was discovered on the passenger door. Investigators also determined that the car had been driven approximately 25 miles since her last refueling.

These details suggest she did return to her apartment, but what happened afterward remains unknown. The unusual circumstances surrounding her vehicle fueled concerns about foul play and made it clear that something sinister may have occurred.

Possible Threats and Foul Play

Authorities have long considered the possibility of foul play. The combination of the broken window, blood evidence, and Tracey’s personal history of former relationships and potential stalking incidents raised questions about whether she encountered someone dangerous on the night of her disappearance.

Connections to Other Cases

In 2011, investigators discovered a significant lead: DNA evidence linked convicted sex offender Danny Ross Giles to Tracey’s disappearance and to the 1995 murder of 26-year-old Patti Berry near the Everett Mall. Giles was already incarcerated at the time of the DNA match. While this connection made Giles a prime suspect, Tracey’s body has never been recovered, and he has not provided information regarding her whereabouts.

Theories Surrounding Her Disappearance

1. Foul Play by Someone She Knew
Tracey’s recent reconciliation with a former boyfriend and the stalking incident involving another ex raise the possibility that someone she knew may have confronted her. The broken window and bloodstain on her car suggest there could have been a struggle either in her vehicle or nearby.

2. Random Encounter with a Stranger
Late-night travel can be unpredictable. Tracey may have encountered a stranger with violent intentions, leading to her disappearance. The lack of witnesses after she left the pub supports the theory that the danger was sudden and unexpected.

3. Connection to Danny Ross Giles
DNA evidence links Giles, a convicted sex offender, to both Tracey’s case and Patti Berry’s murder. This raises the chilling possibility that Tracey may have been a victim of a serial predator operating in the area. However, without a confession or leads from Giles, this remains speculative.

4. Foul Play During the Drive Home
Tracey’s car suggests something occurred during her short drive home. Was she forced off the road, lured to a remote location, or confronted unexpectedly? Investigators have considered these scenarios, but no definitive answers exist.

5. Abduction and Concealment
The fact that Tracey’s body has never been found suggests the possibility of abduction and intentional concealment. Cold case experts note that perpetrators often take extraordinary measures to hide their crimes, which could explain why she has not been located in the decades since.

The combination of personal conflicts, stalking threats, vehicle evidence, and the connection to a known sex offender leaves this case shrouded in mystery. Each theory is plausible but leaves crucial questions unanswered, keeping Tracey Brazzel’s disappearance one of Washington State’s most haunting cold cases.
