The Disappearance of Roxanne Paltauf: A Night That Left a Lifetime of Questions

July 7, 2006. For many, it was just another hot Texas summer evening. But for one family in Austin, it marked the beginning of a nightmare that has never ended. That was the night 18-year-old Roxanne Elizabeth Paltauf disappeared—seemingly without a trace. No witnesses. No security footage. No confirmed sightings. Just unanswered questions and a haunting void that continues to torment those who loved her.

Roxanne was young, sweet, and deeply attached to her family. She had dropped out of high school but had plans to get her GED. She had dreams. She had goals. And she had a future—a future that vanished in the darkness that fell over a rundown motel on the side of Interstate 35.

The Last Night She Was Seen

Roxanne had checked into the Budget Inn on Rundberg Lane with her boyfriend, Louis Walls, to celebrate their two-year anniversary. The location wasn’t exactly luxurious, but for an 18-year-old girl trying to make the best of her relationship, it might have felt like a small escape. What really happened inside that room remains a mystery—only Walls knows for sure.

According to his account, the couple had an argument that evening around 8:30 p.m. Roxanne, he claimed, left the room upset, carrying only her ID. She left everything else behind—her cell phone, her purse, her clothes, makeup, even her shoes. Walls said she never returned.

He did not call the police. He didn’t contact her family right away. In fact, he waited until the next day to inform them—and even then, the details were vague. Most disturbing of all, he held onto Roxanne’s phone for five days, during which over 300 calls were made from it, mostly to an ex-girlfriend of Walls who lived in New Mexico. Why he had her phone, and why those calls were made, has never been satisfactorily explained.

A Troubled Boyfriend and a Missing Girl

Walls had a history of violence. He was older than Roxanne and had been charged with domestic abuse in the past. People close to her said their relationship was rocky and controlling. Some believed she wanted to leave him. If that’s true, it’s possible that whatever argument took place that night escalated into something far more sinister.

Despite Walls's criminal record and suspicious behavior, police never charged him in connection to Roxanne’s disappearance. He remained a person of interest, but the case stagnated early on due to a lack of physical evidence, witnesses, and immediate investigation. Valuable time was lost.

Another Man Enters the Picture

Just days after Roxanne disappeared, a man named Geoffrey Moore was arrested for assault and attempted rape of a woman at a Motel 6—less than a mile away from where Roxanne was last seen. During the arrest, officers discovered something chilling: Roxanne’s ID was in his wallet.

The woman he attacked later contacted Roxanne’s mother. She claimed to believe Moore was connected to Roxanne’s disappearance. Why he had her ID—and how he got it—is still unexplained. Was Roxanne trying to get away from Walls and encountered Moore? Did Moore assault or abduct her? Or did he find the ID discarded somewhere after the fact?

Moore’s involvement has never been proven, and law enforcement has not confirmed any solid evidence linking him directly to her case. But the coincidence is hard to ignore.

Theories and Possibilities

This case has drawn attention from true crime communities for years, and many theories have emerged. None can be confirmed, but all are rooted in the complex, eerie details of that July night.

1. Louis Walls Was Responsible

Walls remains the most obvious suspect in the eyes of many. His account is questionable at best, and his actions following Roxanne’s disappearance—failing to call for help, holding onto her phone, and refusing to cooperate with police beyond a certain point—have kept suspicions alive. If he did harm Roxanne, he may have had time to dispose of evidence before anyone was even looking.

There’s also a theory that Walls may not have acted alone. Some speculate others were present that night, or that he may have sought help covering up a crime.

2. Geoffrey Moore Was Involved

The ID found in Moore’s possession remains one of the strangest elements in the case. The proximity in time and location to Roxanne’s disappearance is chilling. Some believe Moore may have either encountered Roxanne after she fled the motel or was involved in her disappearance from the start.

However, with no forensic evidence linking him to her, police haven’t taken formal action against him in her case.

3. Human Trafficking

Austin sits along a major trafficking corridor, and the area where Roxanne disappeared is known for high crime, including drug use and sex trafficking. Could Roxanne have been lured or abducted by traffickers after walking out of the motel? The fact that she seemingly vanished without a trace could suggest a well-orchestrated crime—but no credible tips, sightings, or leads have supported this theory.

4. She Left on Her Own

There are some who believe Roxanne may have chosen to disappear. But this theory quickly collapses under scrutiny. She left behind everything she owned, including money, clothes, and contact with her loved ones. She was incredibly close to her mother and siblings and had been making plans for her future. For someone who wasn’t known to run away, this theory feels unlikely and almost dismissive of her life and character.

A Mother’s Fight for Justice

Roxanne’s mother, Elizabeth Paltauf, has never stopped searching for her daughter. She’s held vigils, conducted her own investigations, and fought to keep her daughter’s story alive in a world that often forgets missing girls from troubled homes or working-class neighborhoods.

Every year that passes without answers is another year of pain and questions. Elizabeth has expressed frustration with the way the initial investigation was handled—valuable time was lost, and important leads may have been missed entirely.

Still, she continues to fight. She has advocated for her daughter, kept her picture in the media, and worked with nonprofits that assist families of missing persons. Her strength has been the backbone of this cold case.

Where Things Stand Now

As of now, Roxanne’s case remains unsolved. Detectives have revisited it over the years, especially as technology has improved. They’ve re-examined her phone records, interviewed old witnesses again, and tried to piece together what went wrong. But they still need that one tip, that one witness, that one moment of truth.

Her family still waits. Her mother still hopes. And her community still remembers.
